Steve you are right and wrong about horn players.

I have been a sax player in Baltimore for many, many years working with numerous bands and recording artists. I, and most of the players I know, do not use charts and are certainly willing to rehearse. I prefer not to use charts and also insist on rehearsals unless I'm on simply a one night fill in job. I would love to be with a steady group as in the "old" days.

As far as being mercenary...we just want to be paid the fair and going rate. Do you want to work free? I doubt it.

You are right though about the lack of venues wanting to pay for a big group; most of them will cut a 5 piece group to 4 if they can cut the horn.
